Read the text and choose the correct option to answer the questions. A. Lurking in the darkest depths of the ocean lives the most bizarre and terrifying creature on Earth. The anglerfish dwells in waters so deep it spends its entire life devoid of sunlight! To most animals, the only visible part of the anglerfish is a glowing spine upon its head. By rocking the spine back and forth, it lures shrimps, squids and other fish towards it. Then, when its unsuspecting victims are within reach, it opens its mouth and devours them whole! Indeed, the jaws of the anglerfish are so large and powerful that it is actually able to swallow prey twice the size of its entire body! Gulp! B. How long can you survive without food or water? Perhaps little more than a week or two? Well, how about going for several years? While this may seem impossible the green-striped frog is able to do just that! By going into a special mode of hibernation, this frog burrows into the ground where it can sleep for years! This special technique allows it to survive in much drier habitats than other frogs. Indeed, green-striped frogs spend the majority of their time underground waiting for rain to fall. When this happens, they emerge from their slumber and gorge upon just about anything they can fit in their mouths. Well, it does have to last them for years! C. It may come as a surprise that the toughest creature in the world is also one of the smallest! Visible only under a microscope, moss piglets are by far the most adaptable species on our planet. They are found in almost every habitat on Earth, from freezing Arctic seas to humid tropical rainforests. In fact, they are nearly invincible and can survive temperatures between -200°C to 151°C! In order to survive such extreme conditions, moss piglets can actually suspend their metabolism. This means that they can enter a death-like state during which they require no food or water. Moss piglets can maintain this state for years, and then simply spring back to life as though nothing happened! Now you don't get much tougher than that! D. The thorny dragon is a true master of survival. Armoured with sharp spikes, it is a bit of a mouthful for any potential predator! However, being attacked is rarely a problem because this lizard can change colour according to its surroundings. In spite of its prickly demeanour, the thorny dragon is completely harmless. In fact, the only animals which it threatens are ants. This lizard will eat nothing else and can devour 3000 of them in a single feed! By darting out its sticky tongue, it eats them one-by-one at a rate of 45 ants per minute! And when it's had its fill, it buries itself in the sand for a good night's rest.

✮ Read the text. According to the text, how long did Amy's hypnotherapy experience last? Choose the correct answer. Amy Logan’s insomnia was leading to a lot of restless nights. Taking a friend’s advice, she decided to pay a visit to a hypnotist. Here Amy looks at the medical benefits of hypnosis and is put into a deep, deep sleep ... . The lights are dim and the couch is comfortable; the hypnotist’s voice is monotonous, yet soothing. “Listen and relax, listen and relax,” he repeats over and over. My arms and legs and even my eyelids are feeling heavy. My breathing is slowing down, as though I’m falling into a deep sleep and then the hypnotist begins ... . There is evidence that the ancient Egyptians used hypnotism over 2,000 years ago, but hypnotherapy as we know it dates from the 18th century. Austrian physician Franz Mesmer became renowned for treating nervous disorders and we still use his name today whenever we say we are ‘mesmerised’ by something. It wasn’t until the following century, however, that surgeons began to use hypnotism (coming from the Greek word for sleep) to relax patients during surgery. With modern anaesthetics, however, hypnotism has become associated with stage-show hypnotists entertaining an audience, swinging a pocket-watch in front of their victims and getting them to cluck like a chicken! Now, with the help of hypnotherapy, people are managing anxiety, losing weight, stopping snoring and overcoming many other addictions and conditions. In fact, up to 75% of people who have used hypnotherapy to stop smoking have been able to kick the habit. It has also helped people suffering from phobias, depression or panic attacks. So how exactly does it work? Scientists are not 100% sure. What they do know is that it creates a state of deep relaxation in which patients are more open to suggestions than when they are wide awake. Patients sometimes compare the experience to being totally absorbed in a good book or film. They are not cut off from the outside world, but they’re completely focused on the hypnotist’s voice. It’s at this point that he can suggest positive changes to thought patterns and habits. Hypnotherapy isn’t just for psychological problems, though. Amazingly, some hospitals are now using it alongside conventional medicine to reduce pain and speed up recovery. Burn victims, for instance, have benefited from pain relief after a session of hypnotherapy. One pensioner even had an operation which involved a surgeon sawing into her foot while under hypnosis! She says, “I said to myself that if I had any pain I should think of it as waves lashing against a sea wall. Every time it happened, I imagined the pain going away, like the tide.” While hypnotism isn’t a magic wand, it seems it may be able to treat countless conditions. Moreover, it is painless as well as risk-free, it has no side effects and it’s cheap. Many people, however, are still not willing to put their faith in a therapy that can’t be scientifically proven. Before trying hypnotherapy for myself, I did a little research and found out that although about 90% of people can be hypnotised, good hypnotherapy patients tend to be relaxed, imaginative, intelligent and easily absorbed by things. So what happened after my own hypnotherapy experience? Well, throughout it, I felt normal and could still hear the traffic outside, but when I ‘awoke’ after what I thought was about 20 minutes, I was surprised to learn that an hour had passed. I have to admit I’ve been sleeping better ever since. Not perfectly, but there has definitely been an improvement. It looks like hypnotherapy might work for me, but what about you? Have you ever dreamed of a varied job which would involve presenting the Olympics on TV or interviewing celebrity figures like Paris Hilton or Jude Law? You do? Then why not become a TV or radio presenter? As a presenter, you’ll be working on a wide variety of projects. You may be interviewing guests on chat shows, hosting quiz and game shows, introducing sports or music programs, or presenting specialist programs like travel or gardening. If you prefer the serious stuff, you can specialize in current affairs or make documentaries. Although a presenter’s main job is done in front of the cameras, there’s a lot to do behind the scenes as well. You’ll be expected to plan each show with the producer or director, do research and rehearse the script. You may get to write your own material, and you’ll probably be involved in online broadcasting, too. Personality is important in this profession. You’ve got to be confident and outgoing and be able to interact with the audience. Ambition and motivation are very important too, along with excellent presentation skills and a good voice. Problems are bound to arise while you’re on air and quick decisions will be called for. You’ll need to think on your feet and stay calm under pressure. Life as a presenter can have its downsides. If you’re on a short contract, as is normal, you’ll be in and out of work quite frequently. Hours are sometimes unsociable, too. Getting up at 4 a.m. is tough, as is working late at night while your friends are out partying! And working conditions can be trying at times: while most TV studios are comfortable, working outside often involves spending time in all kinds of weather and situations. But these are minor worries, according to presenter Emma Johnson. "I host a radio breakfast show and it’s really exciting", she says. "I never know what to expect. I leave for work with my day planned out, but often something big will have happened by the time I get to the studio. I just say, Ok, I’ll change my plan and report on that instead. There are some nerve-racking situations but it’s what I like best about the job". She meets plenty of celebrities, too. "I’m interviewing a top boy band later today and this time tomorrow I’ll be flying to Hollywood to meet actor Russel Crowe," she explains. Although Emma loves her job, her big ambition is to work in TV. "My present contract runs out next month," she says. I’m going to have a holiday, and then I’ll be knocking on the door of my local TV company". Emma got into presenting through her acting background, but there is no set route into the profession. Some presenters have university qualifications, while music show hosts have often been performers themselves, or may have worked as DJs in clubs. For entertainment shows, presenters often have an acting background and audition to present the show. Competition is stiff in this field, so if you’re starting out and you want to get noticed ahead of other applicants, proof of practical work experience is essential. Producing a student newspaper is one way to get experience, as is volunteer work on a hospital or student radio station. Specializing in a certain area, like sport or music, can be useful, too. It looks good on your CV and marks you from the rest of the crowd. Want to know more? GetFamous.com is running a one-day TV presenter course next month. Experts will teach you all about the world of TV presenting while you try out your skills in front of the cameras.

Coffee decaffeination processes Every day it seems that medical researchers come out with a new study about coffee, how it is extremely unhealthy for you and/or full of amazing benefits. The focus of most of these studies is more particularly about the effects of caffeine on human health. As caffeine, coffee’s most potent element, is a stimulant, it can produce both positive and negative effects. It can wake you up in the morning, but it can also lead to sleeplessness, a racing heartbeat, and anxiety. It is therefore no surprise that many people have decided to cut caffeine out of their diets. As for me, I have grown to like the taste of coffee, but to me the main purpose of drinking it is to get an extra jolt of energy. That is why I will admit to a certain prejudice against decaf, perhaps prompted by bad experiences with weak and tasteless brew, because it is true that the actual process of removing caffeine from coffee can degrade the taste beyond repair. Early decaffeination attempts involved soaking the green beans in water and then using various solvents to separate the caffeine in the resulting water solution. The beans were then re-introduced to the caffeine-free solution in order to absorb some of the flavour they had lost. Solvents used included benzene, chloroform, and trichloroethylene, all of which were later found to have toxic effects. In the 1970s, dichloromethane came into use to replace the earlier solvents before it too was deemed possibly carcinogenic. In response to these concerns about solvents, some coffee companies began to run the water solution through charcoal filters as a means of removing the caffeine. The so-called Swiss Water Process, developed in Switzerland in the 1930s, goes one step further. After a batch of coffee beans has been steeped in hot water, that water is filtered, and then is used to soak the next batch of beans to be processed. In this way, the beans lose caffeine as they soak, but lose less of their flavour. Yet another method that aims to safely remove caffeine from coffee beans involves a fascinating compound procedure. The solvent used in this method is neither water nor one of the earlier toxic solvents. Instead, caffeine in the coffee beans is dissolved by means of carbon dioxide. In order to accomplish this, the carbon dioxide must become a supercritical fluid, created when it is compressed and heated to the point that it has the same density in liquid and gaseous forms. As this supercritical CO2 is passed through the beans, it can penetrate them because of its gaseous properties, and yet is able to dissolve the caffeine they contain because of its liquid properties. In 2004, Brazilian scientists identified a new strain of coffee beans with a naturally low level of caffeine. They found three coffee plants from Ethiopia that contain almost no caffeine, as they seem lack an enzyme necessary to caffeine production. If these plants can be crossed with commercial strains of coffee plants, we may one day see more coffee on the market that is naturally low in caffeine. With these advances, and the current methods of decaffeination, decaf junkies are sure to be able to get their fix of coffee that not only tastes great, but won’t keep them up half the night. As for me, I do want to stay up half the night, so I’ll stick to my full-strength brew.
